The Waste Land

Line 428

Quando fiam uti chelidon—O swallow swallow

Eliot's Note

428. V. Pervigilium Veneris. Cf. Philomela in Parts II and III.

Context

Eliot quotes from the poem Pervigilium Veneris (Vigil of Venus). Authorship of the poem is uncertain but is usually assigned to the Roman poet Tiberianus. The quoted lines translate as “When will I be as the swallow?”, a final reference to the myth of Philomela. See the note to line 100 for the story of Philomela.
